Junior Worldmark Encyclopedia of Foods & Recipes of the World Vol 1 - 4 {Repost}

  • Junior Worldmark Encyclopedia of Foods & Recipes of the World Vol 1 - 4
  • Publisher: UXL | ISBN: 078765423X | edition 2001 | PDF | 670 pages | 45,2 mb
  • This approach to world cultures through food could have been a major breakthrough for its intended middle-school audience. It has many of the right ingredients, especially its established Junior Worldmark format, where alphabetized country entries are divided into standard subsections covering geography; history; foods (including those of different culture groups); religious and holiday celebrations; mealtime customs; politics, economics, and nutrition; and both print and Web-based resources for further study. The 70 articles cover nations and culture groups worldwide and offer more than 700 recipes for both traditional and modern dishes. Introductory material addresses basic safety and health issues, defines cooking terminology and procedures, and lists ingredients, with suggestions on how to locate more exotic goods. Unfortunately, the set has several drawbacks. The most noticeable is the lack of color photographs or graphic enhancement. Murky black-and-white pictures accompany the recipes, creating tableaus that are particularly unappetizing. The photos are so grainy that even shots meant to instruct or demonstrate are useless. The recipes themselves are serviceable but unexciting.

A Companion to California Wine: An Encyclopedia of Wine and Winemaking from the Mission Period to the Present

  • A Companion to California Wine: An Encyclopedia of Wine and Winemaking from the Mission Period to the Present By Charles L. Sullivan
  • University of California Press | 1998-10-01 |ISBN-10: 0520213513 | Pages: 368 | pdf | 3.5 mb
  • California is the nation's great vineyard, supplying grapes for most of the wine produced in the United States. The state is home to more than 700 wineries, and California's premier wines are recognized throughout the world. But until now there has been no comprehensive guide to California wine and winemaking. Charles L. Sullivan's A Companion to California Wine admirably fills that gap--here is the reference work for consumers, wine writers, producers, and scholars.
  • Sullivan's encyclopedic handbook traces the Golden State's wine industry from its mission period and Gold Rush origins down to last year's planting and vintage statistics. All aspects of wine are included, and wine production from vine propagation to bottling is described in straightforward language. There are entries for some 750 wineries, both historical and contemporary; for more than 100 wine grape varieties, from Aleatico to Zinfandel; and for wine types from claret to vermouth--all given in a historical context.
  • In the book's foreword the doyen of wine writers, Hugh Johnson, tells of his own forty-year appreciation of California wine and its history. "Charles Sullivan's Companion," he adds, "will provide the grist for debate, speculation, and reminiscence from now on. With admirable dispassion he sets before us just what has happened in the plot so far."

The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Homes through World History, 3 Volume Set

  • James M. Steele, "The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Homes through World History, 3 Volume Set"
  • Greenwood | 2009 | ISBN: 0313337888 | 864 pages | PDF | 14,1 MB
  • The house, throughout history, in every place in the world, has been built to provide shelter from the elements. The dwellings that have resulted are as different as the people that have built them, the social norms that prevailed at the time and place in which they were built and the natural environment that they adapted to. Studying them now in a comprehensive way allows us to understand the social, political, economic and religious conditions that existed for their inhabitants. They are a three-dimensional record of culture. Twenty-four pages of color images, along with black and white images through three volumes, illustrate the homes of people throughout the world. The volumes cover ancient times to the late Middle Ages, the Renaissance to the Industrial Revolution, and the Post-Industrial Revolution to the Present.

Encyclopedia of the Archaeology of Ancient Egypt

  • Encyclopedia of the Archaeology of Ancient Egypt
  • Publisher: Routledge | ISBN: 0203982835 | edition 1999 | PDF | 1280 pages | 12,4 mb
  • This outstanding work is prepared by scholars for serious students of the archaeology of ancient Egypt. Egyptologists, philologists, historians, classicists, art historians, and anthropologically trained archaeologists helped write it. Margaret Bunson's Encyclopedia of Ancient Egypt (Facts On File, 1991) is much more accessible and more reasonably priced for public, middle-school, high-school, and college undergraduate libraries. Her black-and-white illustrations are strong and definitions are brief and clear for term-paper purposes. There are entries for such familiar topics as Nefertiti and Tuthmose (spelling used by Bard), which are accessible in Bard only through the index as part of more complex, but thorough, discussions. Bard's work, however, is well worth the cost and belongs in all college and university libraries and other libraries supporting research in ancient archaeology.

Endangered Species, 2 Edition (3 Vols Set) (repost)

  • Sonia Benson, Rob Nagel, "Endangered Species, 2 Edition (3 Vols Set)"
  • Gale Group | 2004 | ISBN: 0787676187 | 934 pages | PDF | 169 MB
  • This guide to endangered species worldwide is highly selective, describing 700 animals and plants of the many thousands that are threatened with extinction. The species have been selected from lists compiled by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), and IUCN-the World Conservation Union. Animal entries are arranged by species and then by family and genus; there is a separate section for plants. Entries are listed by common name, followed by scientific name. A shaded box contains phylum, class, order, and family; the status of the animal or plant on the lists of any of the three organizations; and geographic range. Essays provide a physical description, breeding and habitat information, and conservation efforts and survival outlook for the species. These entries are one to two pages in length. A small black-and-white photograph is provided for about half the entries; some of these photographs have been too tightly cropped, cutting off the animal's horns or its tail. Supplementary material consists of lists of extinct species and of wildlife and conservation organizations, a bibliography arranged by species, and a series of simple black-and-white maps of regions of the world. The geographic index shows that there is good representation of animals from all parts of the world. American species are listed both under U.S.A. and specific states. The index lists both popular and scientific names.
